Hydrodynamics of Frameless Enclosures: Why They Don't Leak

A recurring concern among homeowners is the watertight integrity of a system that lacks bulky metal framing. When properly engineered, a frameless enclosure utilizes hydrodynamics and precise tolerances to contain water perfectly.

The 1/4" Slope Principle

A frameless shower relies on the underlying tile architecture. The most critical element is the curb or threshold pitch. Building code and best practices dictate a 1/4-inch per foot slope tilted inward toward the drain.

If the substrate is level or slopes outward, gravity will force water under the glass door, regardless of how tightly the glass is cut. We assess slope topography via laser level before approving any substrate for a frameless installation.

Managing Clearance Gaps

Heavy glass doors require clearance to swing without striking adjacent panels or walls. In a precision installation, these hinge-side and strike-side gaps are engineered to a tight 3/16" to 1/4" tolerance.

  • Deflection Control: We specify heavy-duty architectural hinges with zero slop, ensuring the door remains perfectly centered within its gap, preventing collision and maintaining consistent seal pressure.
  • Polycarbonate Seals: We utilize ultra-clear, minimalist polycarbonate bulb seals and bottom sweeps to manage the remaining 3/16" gap. These sweeps act as hydrodynamic deflectors, catching surface water running down the glass and redirecting it to the sloped tile curb.

In short: a properly laser-measured, CNC-cut frameless shower installed over a correctly pitched curb will not leak. Water management is a feature of precise engineering, not thick aluminum frames.
