The terminology surrounding shower enclosures can be confusing. As glazing professionals, we define systems strictly by their load-bearing methodology and glass thickness requirements.
Structural Frameless Systems
A true frameless system relies entirely on the structural rigidity of the glass itself. There are no U-channels or headers wrapping the perimeter of the glass.
- Engineering: Requires heavy 10mm (3/8") or 12mm (1/2") tempered safety glass.
- Mounting: Panels are anchored using minimal mechanical clips or structural silicone joints. Doors utilize heavy-duty pivot hinges anchored directly to structural wall blocking.
- Clearance: Demands millimeter-precision laser measurement, as the glass is CNC-machined to match the exact topography of the substrate. Gaps are typically kept to a 3/16" tolerance.
Semi-Frameless Systems
Semi-frameless systems utilize thinner, non-structural glass that requires perimeter aluminum framing to prevent excessive deflection and structural failure.
- Engineering: Utilizes 6mm (1/4") or 8mm (5/16") tempered glass. The glass cannot support its own weight over large spans without the metal exoskeleton.
- Mounting: The stationary panels sit inside aluminum tracks. The door itself is usually the only "frameless" component, lacking metal around its immediate edges, hence the term "semi-frameless."
- Clearance: More forgiving of out-of-plumb walls, as the aluminum tracks can adjust and hide variances in the tile work.
At WaveGlass, we specialize exclusively in heavy-glass structural frameless installations, as they provide superior longevity, hygienic maintenance (no mold-harboring tracks), and the highest architectural aesthetic across Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
