Project Overview
A climate-controlled, museum-quality glass wine enclosure. We utilized heavy Starphire low-iron glass to perfectly display the custom racking and lighting without any color distortion. The doors feature specialized weather stripping to maintain precise temperature and humidity.
The Challenge
An avid wine collector in Langley requested a show-stopping, climate-controlled wine cellar to be built as a central architectural feature in their newly renovated dining room. The enclosure needed to securely store hundreds of valuable bottles while maintaining a strict environment of 13°C (55°F) and 60% humidity. The visual goal was a 'floating' glass box that allowed unobstructed views of the custom millwork, internal LED lighting, and the wine collection itself. The primary challenge was achieving the necessary thermal and vapor seal using a frameless glass design, as typical frameless gaps would allow conditioned air to escape and cause the cooling unit to run continuously and freeze up.
Our Solution
We engineered a sophisticated, quasi-frameless enclosure using 12mm Starphire low-iron tempered glass. The low-iron glass was crucial here, as it eliminated the green hue that would have distorted the color of the wine labels and the warm tones of the custom wood racking. To achieve the required climate seal without bulky framing, we utilized a low-profile, thermally broken perimeter channel recessed into the floor and ceiling. The frameless glass doors were fitted with specialized, clear polycarbonate acoustic/thermal bulb seals on all edges, and we installed a self-dropping threshold sweep that lowers to seal the bottom gap when the door closes. High-tension, matte black pivot hinges ensured the heavy doors closed securely against the seals.
The Result
The completed luxury wine cellar is a breathtaking focal point that performs as exceptionally as it looks. The ultra-clear Starphire glass provides a museum-quality display, making the illuminated wine collection appear as if it's suspended in the room. Crucially, the specialized perimeter sealing system and drop-sweeps successfully created a tight thermal envelope. The climate control system operates efficiently and consistently, holding the exact temperature and humidity parameters required for long-term wine preservation without excessive cycling or condensation buildup on the exterior glass. The installation seamlessly blends high-performance refrigeration requirements with ultra-modern, minimalist aesthetic design.
