Wood Post Railing

Project Overview

An engineered exterior glass railing system designed to maximize the sweeping ocean views. The heavy 12mm tempered panels were secured using marine-grade stainless steel standoffs directly into the concrete fascia, creating a completely frameless floating effect.

The Challenge

A cliffside property in North Vancouver boasted spectacular, panoramic views of the Burrard Inlet and downtown skyline. The expansive outdoor living area required an extensive perimeter railing system for safety. The clients were adamant that the barrier should not impede their million-dollar views, ruling out traditional picket or framed glass railings. Furthermore, the property's exposed coastal location meant the system had to withstand high wind loads, driving rain, and the corrosive effects of the marine environment. The architectural design of the deck required the railing to be mounted to the concrete fascia rather than top-mounted, to preserve maximum usable deck space.

Our Solution

We deployed a fully engineered, frameless glass standoff railing system utilizing robust 12mm clear tempered safety glass. To combat the harsh coastal environment, all mounting hardware was specified as marine-grade 316 stainless steel, offering superior corrosion resistance. We used high-capacity fascia standoffs (or 'pins'), precision-drilled and epoxied deep into the structural concrete edge of the deck. This method allowed the thick glass panels to be securely bolted to the face of the deck, extending upward to form a rigid, top-cap-free barrier. Each panel was custom measured to follow the complex curves and elevations of the deck perimeter, ensuring uniform gaps and perfect alignment across the entire span.

The Result

The finished exterior glass railing system is a triumph of structural engineering and minimalist design. By eliminating top rails and vertical posts, the railing essentially disappears against the backdrop of the ocean and sky, blurring the line between the deck and the breathtaking horizon. The fascia-mounted installation successfully maximized the client's outdoor square footage, while the heavy 12mm glass provides a reassuringly solid and secure barrier that easily deflects the high coastal winds. The marine-grade stainless steel hardware adds a touch of modern nautical elegance and guarantees decades of rust-free performance. The clients can now enjoy uninterrupted, floor-to-ceiling views of the landscape, significantly enhancing their outdoor living experience.
