Den Glass Side Lite, Port Coquitlam
Port Coquitlam, BC
Project Overview
Custom Crittal-style black grid glass side lite installed beside a den doorway in a Port Coquitlam home — borrowing natural light from the den into the adjacent hallway while creating a defined architectural feature that complements the room's sports memorabilia display.
The Challenge
After enclosing a previously open den with a new wall and door, the homeowner's hallway became noticeably darker. They wanted a glass panel beside the door that borrowed light from the den but felt like a deliberate design feature rather than an afterthought. The den itself is a sports memorabilia room with display cabinets, framed jerseys, and hockey collectibles — the glass treatment needed to match the room's character.
Our Solution
WaveGlass fabricated a full-height side lite in a matte black steel-look grid frame — a Crittal-style grid pattern that gives the opening a warehouse-loft aesthetic matching the den's character. Clear tempered glass was specified for safety compliance (glass within 300mm of a door edge requires tempering under BC Building Code). The frame was installed into the existing rough opening beside the door with minimal disturbance to the surrounding drywall. Protective film was left on during installation and removed on completion.
The Result
The finished side lite draws light from the den into the hallway and creates a framed view of the memorabilia room beyond — the sports display cabinets and framed jerseys are visible through the grid glass, making the den's character part of the hallway experience. The Crittal-style grid read as an intentional design choice rather than a utility panel.
